This paper contains a review of the current scientific understanding of empathy, a description of the evolution of child rearing in the western societies, the factors of public schooling which are likely to be distressing to children, and ways public schooling and unschooling may be viewed within the framework of psychohistory. In it you will also find the description of the study I conducted which looked at the relationship of people's empathy towards children and their attitudes towards the public schooling and unschooling approaches to children's education.
